What Is a .vsdx File, and How Do You Open One?

A .vsdx file is a Microsoft Visio drawing. Here is what is inside it, how it differs from .vsd, and five ways to open one with or without Visio.

Short answer: a .vsdx file is a diagram saved by Microsoft Visio 2013 or later: flowcharts, org charts, network maps, floor plans. It is not an image. It stores every shape, connector and label as editable objects, which is why you need a diagram tool rather than a photo viewer to open it properly.

What is inside a .vsdx file

A .vsdx file is a ZIP package of XML files, following the same Open Packaging Conventions as .docx and .xlsx. If you rename a copy to .zip and open it, you will see folders such as visio/pages (one XML file per page), visio/masters (the stencil shapes the drawing uses) and docProps (title, author and other metadata).

That structure is what makes a VSDX useful:

  • Shapes stay shapes. A box is a box with text, size and position, not pixels.
  • Connectors are glued. Move a shape and its lines follow.
  • Several pages can live in one file, like sheets in a workbook.
  • Data can be attached to shapes, which Visio uses for data-linked diagrams.

.vsdx vs .vsd and the other Visio extensions

ExtensionWhat it is
.vsdxVisio drawing, Visio 2013 and later (XML in a ZIP package)
.vsdVisio drawing from Visio 2003–2010 (older binary format)
.vsdmDrawing with macros enabled
.vssxStencil: a library of reusable shapes
.vstxTemplate: a starting point for new drawings

Most tools that read Visio files handle .vsdx well and .vsd poorly. If you have an old .vsd, open and save it as .vsdx in Visio first, or ask whoever sent it to do so.

Five ways to open a .vsdx file

1. Microsoft Visio. The desktop app opens and edits everything. If your organization has a Microsoft 365 work or school plan, check whether Visio in Microsoft 365 (the web version) is included; it opens VSDX files in the browser.

2. A free online viewer. LayerBack's VSDX viewer opens the file in your browser without an account; the file is read locally rather than uploaded. Good for "I just need to see this diagram someone sent me".

3. draw.io (diagrams.net). Free, and it imports .vsdx into an editable diagram. Shapes and connectors usually come across well; unusual stencils may turn into plain shapes.

4. LibreOffice Draw. Free desktop software that can open Visio files for viewing and light edits.

5. Convert it. If you want to keep working in another format, convert once and edit there:

How to create a .vsdx file without Visio

You do not need Visio to produce a VSDX that colleagues can open in Visio:

  • From code: Mermaid to Visio and PlantUML to Visio turn diagram code into a native .vsdx.
  • From a spreadsheet: Excel to org chart builds an editable org chart from name and manager columns.
  • From documents or notes: VSDX.ai Studio reads documents, tables, images and recordings and generates a structured, editable Visio diagram you can refine in conversation.

Common problems

  • "The file opens but looks different." Fonts and rare stencils may not exist on the other machine or tool. Standard shapes travel well; custom ones are the usual culprit.
  • "It opened as a picture." Some viewers render a preview only. Use one of the editors above if you need to change it.
  • "The file is corrupted." Because a VSDX is a ZIP, an incomplete download breaks it. Download it again before trying to repair it.
